    Pimentel Leads in ASEAN Chess Tournament

    Jakarta, June 15: Joel Pimented of the Philippines remains unbeaten after four rounds of the 7th ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships being held in Jakarta, Indonesia. He defeated 5th-seed Christer Jon Aplin of Singapore using the black pieces on Wednesday at the Mercure Convention Center. The 24th-ranked Pimentel, incoming freshman of De La Salle-Greenhills, now has a perfect 4.0 points to lead the boys' 14 and under division. Pimentel also beat 18th-seeded Galang Rambu Anarki of Indonesia in the third round late Tuesday. Vietnamese Dong Bao Nghia beat countryman Tran Ngoc Lan to share the lead with Pimentel. RP whiz kid Jan Emmanuel Garcia however, tasted his first loss in the boys' 12 and under at the hands of local bet Nicholas Rahman and got stuck at 3.0 points. Rahman seized the lead with 4.0 points. The 10-year-old Garcia beat Shannon Scott Neubronner of Singapore in the third round.
    John Ranel Morazo of Paniqui, Tarlac, and Paulo James Florendo of Zamboanga City also dropped their matches against Vietnam's Tran Thanh Tu and Ly Hong Nguyen. Morazo stayed at 2.0 points in the boys' 16 and under while Florendo has 2.5 points in the boys' 18 and under.
    The ASEAN Chess Confederation (ACC) annually organizes the Asean Age-Group Championship since 2000. This year it drew the participation of 300 players aged between 8 and 18 from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam. As many as 72 sets of medals are on offer for individuals and teams at standard, rapid and blitz events in this tournament.
