    Vietnam sweeps ASEAN Age Groups Chess Championship

    22.06.06: For the seventh time in a row, Vietnam finished as the winners of the ASEAN Age Groups Chess Championship held in Indonesia from June 11-20. The Viet Nam team took home 70 gold medals and proved that they are a force to reckon with. More than 300 players from Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, the Phillipines, Singapore, Myanmar and Vietnam took part in the Championships dividing into six age groups between U-8 and U-18 in traditional, rapid and blitz chess. 33 out of 36 gold medals in six age groups between U-8 and U-18 went to Vietnamese masters. In the final day on Tuesday, Vietnamese teenage masters won 20 more gold medals to finish far above second place Indonesia, who are 60 gold medals behind, and third-ranked the Philippines, who have 63 less. FIDE master Le Quang Liem earned two more gold medals, taking both individual and men's U-16 team titles at the tournament. Pham Bich Ngoc, lady FIDE master, also hained two gold medals in individual and women's U-16 team. In the standard events, Viet Nam also secured 27 out of 32 gold medals.
