Anand and Topalov Face Defeat Morelia(Mexico), 24th Feb
Thursday was the day of shocks in the 5th round of Morelia-Linares Super Grandmaster Chess Tournament. Both the top seeds lost their matches at the hands of low seeded players. Anand was beaten by Levon Aronian while Veselin Topalov was shocked by Magnus Carlsen
Anand in a tense struggle against Aronian and Topalov with a sensational resignation in a position that must be a draw, lost unbelievably. In fact Carlsen showed the horrified former world champion the defence immediately after he had resigned. 16-year-old Norwegian once again leads the field with 3.5 points.
In other matches between Peter Svidler and Peter Leko and Alexander Morozevich and Vassily Ivanchuk ended in draw. 6th round shall be played on Saturday while the final one shall take place on Sunday.
