FIDE President visits Iran
29.06.06: World Chess Federation (FIDE) President Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited Iran and had a meeting with Mr. Mohammad Ali Abadi - Vice President of Islamic Republic of Iran, Minister of Physical Development of Iran. Issues about the future cooperation between FIDE and Islamic Republic of Iran in the sphere of economics, culture and sport were discussed. Development of the game of chess along with the physical and intellectual development of the Iranian youth in Iran were some of the key points discussed. "Chess in School" is to be introduced in Iran as a compulsory school program. Mr. Abadi also expressed the interest of Iranian government to establish the International Chess Center in Tehran in order to hold regular chess tournaments of different levels. It is worth mentioning that the World Chess Championship Final Match in 2002 took place in Tehran. As the conclusion of the Meeting, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and the President of the Iran Chess Federation Mr. Maddahi had a Friendship Chess Match on an Art Chess Board.
